Our Story

Founded in 1989 by Andrew Willner, NY/NJ Baykeeper emerged as a response to the pollution affecting local waterways, particularly after the Exxon Bayway Oil Spill. This organization serves as a citizen advocate for the NY-NJ Harbor Estuary, focusing on preserving and restoring vital habitats while educating the public.

Impact

To date, NY/NJ Baykeeper has planted over 8 million oysters in NY-NJ Harbor waters and has preserved and restored more than 3,000 acres of critical habitat. Their advocacy has led to significant improvements in water quality through effective legislation and regulations.
