Our Story

The R Merle Palmer Minority Scholarship Foundation was inspired by Merle Palmer's experiences during WWII, where he witnessed the challenges faced by sailors of color. In 1983, he partnered with Rev. Al Davis to establish a scholarship fund aimed at supporting young adults of color in Tacoma, WA. Since then, the foundation has evolved, impacting over 800 students and fostering a brighter future for the community.

Impact

Since its inception, Palmer Scholars has awarded over $370,750.70 in scholarships to 817 promising students of color across Pierce County, achieving an impressive 93% graduation rate in 2023.
