Founded in 1995 by Sherlyn Chew, the Purple Silk Music Education Foundation began with a simple mission: to share the beauty of Chinese music with the youth of Oakland. After discovering a closet full of instruments belonging to her late music teacher, Sherlyn raised funds to create a youth orchestra. Today, this initiative serves over 700 students annually, fostering cultural appreciation and musical talent.
Each year, over 700 students gain proficiency in traditional Chinese instruments, participate in public performances, and earn college credit through our programs.
