Our Story
Project 1:1 began in the Fall of 2008 when founders James and Regina Gamboa cooked a pot of soup from their leftover Thanksgiving dinner and shared it with a woman in need. This simple act of kindness blossomed into a mission to serve the unsheltered community in San Diego. Initially feeding about 50 homeless individuals every Tuesday, the Gamboas and their dedicated volunteers formed deep relationships with those they served, affectionately calling them the "Homies." Over the years, Project 1:1 expanded its offerings beyond meals to include tents, sleeping bags, clothing, and essential supplies.
As the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the need for assistance grew exponentially. Project 1:1 adapted by becoming one of the 35 Super Pantries in the county, serving thousands of families facing food insecurity. Recognizing the need for a more dignified approach to food distribution, the Gamboas acquired a former restaurant and transformed it into the Magnolia Project, a community pantry that allows clients to shop for nutritious foods free of charge.
Magnolia Project stands out as the first people’s choice pantry in San Diego County, offering a wide range of food options, including culturally sensitive items and pet food. The pantry not only provides food but also promotes nutritional education through cooking classes known as "Maggie’s Table," which empower community members to make healthier choices.
