Our Story

Founded in 1971 by the Goodman and Powelson families, Progress Inc was born from a desire to provide independent living arrangements for their adult sons, Billy Goodman and Tommy Powelson. Both young men, despite having intellectual disabilities, yearned for a place of their own. Recognizing the limited options available in the 1970s, their families took a bold step to create a supportive community. By 1972, Progress welcomed eight young adults into a large home, marking the beginning of a journey that would transform lives.

Our Growth and Services

Over the decades, Progress has evolved into one of the largest providers of residential support for adults with intellectual disabilities in Middle Tennessee. The organization has expanded its services to include a Senior Services division launched in 2009, the Smart Art + Craft Supplies social enterprise in 2014, and the Employment Center that opened in 2020. In 2020, Progress achieved agency-wide accreditation through The Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL), solidifying its commitment to quality care.
