Our Story
Founded in 1972 by the Red Book Store Collective in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Prison Book Program (PBP) began with a commitment to distributing politically progressive literature. Recognizing the critical need for reading materials among prisoners, PBP has expanded its mission to include a diverse range of books, including legal and educational resources, reaching individuals across the country.
Impact
As an approved book vendor at over 1,000 prisons and jails in all 50 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico, PBP ensures that books are always free for recipients, significantly enhancing access to vital reading materials for incarcerated individuals.
