Celebrating 30 Years of Substance Misuse Prevention

Thirty years ago, a dedicated group of parents came together to form the Ohio Association of Parents for Drug Free Youth, igniting a movement aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol misuse. This grassroots effort has evolved into Prevention Action Alliance, a leading nonprofit organization committed to preventing substance misuse and promoting mental wellness across Ohio.

Over the years, Prevention Action Alliance has taken significant strides in its mission. Initially focused on recognizing schools for their drug-free initiatives, the organization has expanded its reach by forming the Ohio Alcohol and Drug Policy Alliance and the Statewide Prevention Coalition Association. Nationally recognized for its impactful work, PAA has received awards from esteemed organizations such as the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

In 2005, the organization rebranded to Drug Free Action Alliance, reflecting its broader mission. With initiatives like Parents Who Host Lose the Most and the Ohio College Initiative, PAA has empowered communities through education and advocacy. The establishment of the Ohio Center for Coalition Excellence further underscores its commitment to training and supporting local coalitions.

In 2017, the organization adopted its current name, Prevention Action Alliance, and has since expanded its efforts to include conferences, policy summits, and youth rallies, all aimed at fostering healthier communities. PAA continues to advocate for effective policies and practices that promote mental health and prevent substance misuse.
