Our Story
The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, founded in 1927 by passionate outdoor enthusiasts, has dedicated itself to the principles of volunteerism and public service. Originating in Washington, D.C., the club was established to survey and construct sections of the Appalachian Trail, a remarkable 2,100-mile footpath that traverses the Appalachian mountain chain. Under the leadership of Myron Avery, the club played a pivotal role in realizing Benton MacKaye's vision of a continuous trail, culminating in its completion from Maine to Georgia in 1937. Since then, PATC has expanded its mission, maintaining over 1,000 miles of trails, including 240 miles of the Appalachian Trail, while also constructing cabins and shelters for hikers and the community.
