Reducing Food Waste

Our Story

In 1989, Florence Haut witnessed a heartbreaking scene at a major fried chicken chain restaurant: perfectly good food being discarded simply because it hadn’t sold that day. Driven by compassion, she asked to take the food for donation, and thus began the journey of Potluck Food Rescue. With the support of the Junior League of Little Rock, Interfaith Hunger Task Force, and the Arkansas Food Bank, Potluck was officially established on January 9, 1991. Over the past 30+ years, Potluck has redirected millions of pounds of food from landfills to those in need, becoming the first food rescue organization in Arkansas and one of the pioneers in the nation.

Our Impact

Through partnerships with local restaurants, Potluck redistributes between 8,000 and 10,000 pounds of food weekly, equating to around 7,000 meals every week. This effort not only alleviates hunger but also mitigates food waste, saving the equivalent of 2.11 years of electricity consumption for a typical American household each week. Additionally, Potluck composts a ton of food scraps annually, further contributing to environmental sustainability.
