Our Story
The Portsmouth Free Public Library has a rich history that began with the Thursday Evening Group, a gathering of literature enthusiasts who sought to create a town library. On March 18, 1897, a pivotal meeting was held, leading to the establishment of the library with a charter granted by RI Secretary of State Charles P. Bennett. Celebrating its 125th anniversary in March 2022, the library continues to be a cornerstone of the Portsmouth community, providing a wealth of reading materials and resources for all ages.
