About Portland Taiko
Portland Taiko blends the rich tradition of Japanese taiko drumming with a vibrant sense of Asian American identity, creativity, and empowerment. Founded in 1994 by Ann Ishimaru, Zachary Semke, and dedicated community activists, the group began with a single homemade taiko drum and practice instruments crafted from car tires. With the support of the community, Portland Taiko has grown significantly, presenting its first full-length concert in 1997 and evolving into a nonprofit organization that has toured North America since the early 2000s.
Impact
Portland Taiko has reached over 1 million audience members through more than 1500 performances at theaters, schools, community events, and festivals.
