Promoting Personal and Collective Compassion Through Music
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Arts

Our Story

Founded in 1946 by the visionary Boris Sirpo, the Portland Chamber Orchestra began as an all-female string orchestra at Lewis and Clark College. With a rich background in world-class music education, Sirpo led the PCO for two decades, establishing a legacy of excellence. Under the guidance of subsequent Artistic Directors, including Yaacov Bergman, the organization has evolved into a beacon of musical innovation and community engagement.

Our Impact

Dedicated to fostering a more peaceful and harmonious world, the PCO cultivates programs that promote personal and collective compassion through outstanding music. Recent years have seen the presentation of groundbreaking, socially conscious World Premieres by local composers, enriching the cultural landscape of Portland.
