About Portland Area Youth Soccer Association

Founded in 1982, the Portland Area Youth Soccer Association (PAYSA) began as a modest weeklong clinic for children in the West End. With a focus on skills development and enjoyment of play, PAYSA has grown from its humble beginnings into a vital community organization dedicated to providing quality soccer experiences for youth in Portland, Maine.

Our Story

The journey of PAYSA started with the West End Soccer League, which featured balanced teams and no standings, emphasizing the joy of the game over competition. As the program expanded, it became clear that there was a need for more inclusive opportunities, particularly for girls. By transitioning to single-sex teams, PAYSA saw a significant increase in female participation, paving the way for the establishment of junior varsity and varsity programs at local high schools.

PAYSA has been a pioneer in promoting a developmental approach to youth soccer in Maine. While many clubs focused on full 11 vs. 11 games at younger ages, PAYSA adopted short-sided play, a model that has since been embraced statewide. This commitment to skills development and noncompetitive play remains at the heart of PAYSA’s mission.

PAYSA is dedicated to providing age-appropriate soccer experiences for all players, regardless of skill level. The recreational programs are designed to be inclusive, ensuring that every child in Portland has the opportunity to play soccer. The travel program allows players to advance their skills and compete at higher levels, with teams formed through open tryouts and strict adherence to roster size and playing time rules.
