Health Coverage Access

Our Story

Portico HealthNet, originally known as the MetroEast Program for Health, was established in 1995 to address the urgent needs of low-income individuals in the east metro area who lacked health insurance and did not qualify for government assistance. By offering coverage for primary and preventive services, along with care management coordination, Portico has significantly improved the health of its participants while alleviating the financial burden on hospitals that serve uninsured patients.

Over the years, Portico has expanded its services to include personalized application and enrollment assistance for those eligible for public health insurance. In 2000, Portico became an independent 501(c)(3) organization, and with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and MNsure in 2013, the organization grew to reach newly eligible individuals. Portico now trains and supports MNsure navigators and assistors across Minnesota, including bilingual staff to serve immigrant communities.

Impact

Each year, Portico assists over 11,000 uninsured Minnesotans in navigating the complex healthcare system, helping them enroll in affordable health coverage and access essential medical, dental, and mental health services.
