Our Story

Porchlight Inc. began its journey in November 1984, when a tragic event highlighted the urgent need for emergency services for the homeless in Madison. Following the freezing deaths of individuals on the streets, a community effort led to the establishment of a shelter in the basement of University United Methodist Church. Despite claims that homelessness was not an issue in Madison, the shelter served 264 individuals and provided 3,634 nights of shelter in just a few months. This pivotal moment underscored the necessity for a long-term solution.

Impacting Lives

Over the years, Porchlight has evolved from a temporary shelter to a comprehensive service provider, offering a continuum of support from prevention and outreach to transitional programs and permanent housing. The organization has been dedicated to creating sustainable solutions for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Dane County.
