The Story of the Plaza Theatre Foundation
Founded in 2009 by Jonathan and Gayle Rej, the Plaza Theatre Foundation (PTF) emerged from a deep commitment to preserve the Plaza Theatre, a cherished landmark in Atlanta. After purchasing the theatre from long-time owner George LeFont, the Rejs faced the daunting challenge of keeping the doors open amidst the rise of corporate multiplexes. Their vision was clear: the Plaza was irreplaceable and essential to the community.
To navigate the financial hurdles, the PTF was established to accept donations and support from community members. This initiative inspired others to rally around the theatre, transforming it into a hub for community programming and showcasing classic, cult, and independent films.
Despite the challenges, including the costly transition to Digital Cinema Package technology, the Plaza Theatre found new hope in 2012 when the Atlanta Film Society (ATLFS) partnered with the PTF. This collaboration led to increased marketing efforts, operational improvements, and a revitalized community presence.
In 2013, the theatre was purchased by John Brieger and Michael Furlinger, who brought the necessary capital and expertise to implement significant renovations. The Plaza Theatre has since undergone remarkable transformations, including new seating, advanced sound technology, and the successful DCP conversion.
Today, the Plaza Theatre Foundation, administered by the ATLFS, continues to thrive, ensuring that the theatre remains a vital part of Atlanta's cultural landscape. The partnership between the Plaza, PTF, and ATLFS fosters a sustainable future for this beloved venue.
