Founded in 1911, Plays & Players began as a social club dedicated to enriching the theater landscape in Philadelphia. The first President, Maud Durbin Skinner, was closely linked to the American theater scene through her husband, actor Otis Skinner. The theater, originally known as the “Little Theatre of Philadelphia,” opened its doors in 1913, thanks to the vision of Beulah E. Jay and her husband Edward G. Jay, Jr. Together with F.H. Shelton, they aimed to produce underrepresented American plays of ideas. Over the years, Plays & Players has transformed from a members-only club into a professional theater that champions local talent and fosters community engagement.
