Our Story

In 1997, a coalition of business leaders and philanthropic organizations in Pittsburgh recognized the urgent need to enhance the healthcare sector, the region's largest economic driver. The Allegheny Conference on Community Development, led by Karen Wolk Feinstein, PhD, and former Alcoa Chairman Paul O'Neill, established the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative (PRHI) in 1998. This pioneering collaborative aimed to tackle the pressing issues of quality and safety in healthcare, applying industrial improvement methods to transform patient care.

Impact

PRHI has fundamentally reshaped the national dialogue on healthcare. Research indicates that 40% of healthcare spending is wasted due to errors and inefficiencies. PRHI's innovative strategies for delivery system redesign and workforce development have influenced key policies, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
