Our Story
In 2014, after years of providing meals, clothing, and care to those in need, founders Cheryl and Barry Messere encountered women living in tents by the river during the harsh winter. Recognizing the lack of shelters for women in Phoenixville, they felt a profound call to action. With the support of dedicated volunteers, agencies, and churches, they established a transitional housing program known as "The House," which welcomed its first participants in January 2015.
As the program flourished, it became evident that affordable housing options were scarce in the area. Women at The House were making strides toward self-sufficiency but struggled to find stable, affordable homes. In response, Phoenixville Women’s Outreach launched the "Next Step House" in February 2020, offering shared living arrangements with affordable rents and a supportive community.
