About the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras

Founded in 1947, the Phoenix Symphony Guild was established by a visionary group dedicated to creating and funding The Phoenix Symphony. Over the years, this commitment expanded to include the training of young musicians, leading to the formation of the Youth Orchestra in 1952. In response to growing demand, the Symphonette Orchestra was launched in 1955, followed by the Junior Strings program in 1966, providing foundational orchestral skills to budding musicians.

In 2007, the organization evolved into the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras (PYSO), reflecting its broader mission. Today, PYSO encompasses five distinct ensembles: The Symphony Orchestra, The Philharmonic Orchestra, The String Orchestra, The Prelude String Orchestra, and The Wind Orchestra. Each year, nearly 300 talented students are selected through a rigorous audition process to participate in these ensembles, where they benefit from weekly rehearsals led by world-class conductors and professional musicians.

PYSO has garnered local, national, and international acclaim, performing in prestigious venues worldwide. The Music Memory program has introduced thousands of elementary students to the transformative power of classical music for over 60 years, offering an inclusive learning experience that culminates in a live concert performed by the Symphony Orchestra.

Additionally, the Young Musicians Competition, established in 1960, awards scholarships to gifted student musicians, enabling them to attend renowned music camps and festivals across the nation.
