Our Story

In the late 1960s, two separate Philharmonic groups in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton reflected the ideological divide between these neighboring cities. Despite their proximity, communication and collaboration were scarce. However, visionary leaders from both orchestras recognized the potential for a united musical front. In early 1969, casual conversations evolved into a formal exploratory committee, leading to the formation of the Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) Philharmonic. This groundbreaking initiative aimed to offer four performances in each city during the 1970-71 season, marking a significant milestone in the region's cultural landscape.

Impact on the Community

The NEPA Philharmonic regularly graces venues such as the Scranton Cultural Center and the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts. Each year, the Philharmonic introduces classical music to thousands of children and new audiences through innovative programs like the Crescendo Family Concert and Young People’s Concerts, which provide a multi-disciplinary educational experience.
