About Philadelphia Scenic Works

Founded in 2016, Philadelphia Scenic Works (PSW) emerged from the need for affordable scene fabrication after the closure of a key local shop. This initiative was spearheaded by leaders from prominent organizations such as InterAct Theatre, Theatre Horizon, and Act II Playhouse, who recognized the urgent need for support within the arts community. PSW has since provided over 90 local organizations, including theaters, museums, and cultural institutions, with high-quality fabrication, shop space, and scenery rentals, enabling them to produce innovative work despite rising costs and labor market challenges.

Impact on the Arts Community

PSW plays a vital role in stabilizing the technical artist workforce through its Technical Artist Workforce Development program. This initiative offers equitable employment, competitive wages, and free training, ensuring that skilled artists and technicians can thrive in a sustainable environment. By enhancing the quality of productions and diversifying the pipeline of technical artists, PSW has become a cornerstone of the Philadelphia arts ecosystem.
