Our Story

Phans for Racial Equity (PHRE) was founded in late 2017 by passionate Phish fans who recognized the urgent need to address racial inequities within the live music community. The organization emerged from heartfelt discussions about the experiences of fans of color and the responsibility of white fans to foster change. Following a violent incident involving two Black fans in 2018, PHRE gained momentum, expanding its membership and activities, including tabling at Phish shows and engaging in community discussions.

Our Impact

Since becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2021, PHRE has mobilized over $25,000 from the Phish community for racial justice organizations. The establishment of a BIPOC advisory board and the creation of the Jam Band Community Racial Equity Commitment Statement, which has garnered over 400 signatures, are testaments to its impact.
