About Pesticide Action Network
Founded in 1982, Pesticide Action Network (PAN) emerged from a global concern over the harmful effects of pesticides on health and the environment. The organization was born during a pivotal meeting in Penang, Malaysia, where activists recognized the urgent need to address the dangers posed by chemical-intensive agriculture. As the global pesticide trade flourished, farmers found themselves trapped in a cycle of dependency on hazardous chemicals, leading to severe health impacts and ecological damage.
Impactful Initiatives
Over the years, PAN has successfully campaigned for the banning of the "Dirty Dozen Pesticides" in numerous countries, significantly reducing the risks associated with these harmful substances. One of PAN's most notable achievements is the implementation of Farmer Field Schools, which have trained over one million farmers in Indonesia. These schools promote sustainable agricultural practices that integrate Indigenous knowledge and ecological pest management, resulting in improved crop yields and reduced reliance on pesticides.
