Our Story
Community action in Syracuse began over fifty years ago, inspired by President Lyndon B. Johnson's declaration of a war on poverty. On August 20, 1964, the Economic Opportunities Act was signed into law, paving the way for programs aimed at assisting low-income individuals. Before this official initiative, local agencies like the Mayor’s Commission on Youth and Crusade for Opportunities were already fostering collaboration among diverse community members to enhance quality of life and dismantle racial barriers.
In 1968, the Crusade for Opportunities evolved into People’s Equal Action and Community Effort, known as PEACE, Inc. With an initial budget of $400,000 and just three programs, including Head Start and Family Resource Centers, PEACE, Inc. has grown significantly. Today, it operates nine major programs with a budget exceeding $25 million, adapting to the changing needs of the community.
Throughout its history, PEACE, Inc. has celebrated numerous successes, helping individuals rise out of poverty, earn college degrees, purchase homes, run for public office, start businesses, and secure stable employment. However, the journey is far from over. Many community members still face economic instability, with children entering school unprepared, seniors in need of companionship and nutritious meals, and adults struggling to find stable housing and employment.
Our Impact
PEACE, Inc. has successfully empowered individuals to achieve self-sufficiency and improve their lives.
