Our Story

Founded in 1979 by Hazel Johnson, People for Community Recovery (PCR) emerged from the urgent need to address tenant rights and environmental issues in Altgeld Gardens, a community grappling with high cancer rates due to industrial pollution. Johnson's relentless activism has led to significant victories in environmental justice, including the establishment of clean water services and the removal of hazardous waste.

Our Impact

PCR has successfully lobbied for crucial environmental justice measures, such as the installation of water and sewer lines in underserved communities and the establishment of solar job training programs. The organization has been instrumental in raising awareness about environmental racism and advocating for policy changes that benefit frontline communities.
