Our Story
Penikese Island School, Inc. has a storied history dating back to 1602, when it was first documented by English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold. Over the centuries, the island has served various roles, from a natural history school founded by Louis Agassiz in 1873 to a leprosy hospital in the early 1900s, and a residential school for troubled boys until 2011. Today, the organization is dedicated to providing experiential environmental educational programs that leverage the island's unique natural setting to cultivate environmental literacy and stewardship among students.
