Our Story

Peace Hill at Avila originated in 1996 when a dedicated group gathered for monthly meditation, envisioning a retreat center for interfaith community. Named in honor of Sister Evelyn Mattern, one of the founders, Peace Hill became a nonprofit in 2020. In partnership with the Center for Community Self-Help, the Avila retreat center now serves as a training hub for community organizers, integrating mindfulness into social action.

Our Impact

Peace Hill at Avila empowers activists and organizers through contemplative practices, fostering a compassionate and just society. By integrating mindfulness and reflection into their work, individuals can sustain inner peace while striving for systemic change.
