The Story of Peace Bridge

In 1949, during the post-WW2 occupation of Japan, a group of Hawaii-based soldiers, led by MSGT Hugh O’Reilly, discovered the dire conditions at the Holy Family Home orphanage in Osaka. Moved by the plight of the children, O’Reilly initiated a fundraising effort among his fellow soldiers, which eventually led to the construction of a new orphanage. This act of compassion marked the beginning of a lasting bond between the U.S. Army "Wolfhounds" and the Holy Family Home.

Over the years, the tradition of supporting these children continued, with annual trips to Hawaii for select children, allowing them to experience the warmth and culture of the islands. This initiative not only provided joy and hope to the children but also fostered international friendship and understanding.

In 1992, the legacy was further strengthened when Mr. Akio Aoyama, a Japanese national, began donating funds to ensure that the children could continue to visit Hawaii and receive Christmas gifts. Following the passing of MSGT O’Reilly in 2007, Peace Bridge was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to uphold and expand this mission of peace and love for the children of the Holy Family Home.

Impact of Peace Bridge

Peace Bridge promotes international peace and understanding by providing cultural exchange opportunities for disadvantaged children. The organization has successfully facilitated annual summer visits for children from the Holy Family Home, provided Christmas gifts, and established a scholarship program for deserving children.
