About Paws Giving Independence

Paws Giving Independence NFP (PGI) was founded in 2008 by dedicated students from Bradley University who recognized the need for service dog training in Central Illinois. After collaborating with a service dog group in Chicago, they realized that many individuals with disabilities could greatly benefit from trained service dogs. With backgrounds in physical therapy and nursing, the founders combined their expertise with a friend’s business acumen to establish PGI.

Our Mission

PGI is committed to training service dogs to assist individuals with various disabilities, including spinal cord injuries, muscular dystrophy, and cerebral palsy. Many of our dogs are rescued from local shelters, and we provide these invaluable companions free of charge, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent individuals from receiving the support they need.

By bridging the gap between the disabled and non-disabled communities, PGI not only enhances the lives of individuals with disabilities but also promotes animal rescue. Our service dogs perform essential tasks, such as picking up dropped items and turning on lights, fostering independence for their owners.
