Empowering Lives Through Independent Living

Panhandle Independent Living Center Inc (PILC) began as a vision among a dedicated group of individuals in the early 1980s, aiming to create a more inclusive community for people with disabilities in Amarillo, Texas. Initially founded as Amarillo Disabled Individuals in Action (ADIA), the organization laid the groundwork for barrier-free living and public awareness. In 1988, ADIA established the Panhandle Action Center for Independent Living Skills, marking the city’s first full-time agency focused on empowering individuals with disabilities through training and counseling.

In 1998, the organization rebranded as Panhandle Independent Living Center (PILC) and has since expanded its services and facilities to better serve the community. With a mission to educate and encourage individuals with disabilities to live, work, and thrive in an accessible environment, PILC operates from a spacious facility at 417 SW 10th Avenue, which was renovated to accommodate its growing needs.
