Our Story

The Ozark Society was founded in 1962 by Dr. Neil Compton and dedicated individuals to protect the Buffalo River from proposed dams. This grassroots effort led to the establishment of the Buffalo National River, the first national river in the United States, and has since expanded to preserve the wild and scenic rivers, wilderness, and unique natural areas in the Ozark-Ouachita region.

Our Impact

Through tireless advocacy, the Ozark Society has achieved significant conservation milestones, including the passage of the Arkansas Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and the creation of the first two USFS wilderness areas in Arkansas. The Society's efforts have thwarted numerous federal dam projects, ensuring the protection of vital ecosystems across multiple states.
