Our Story
The history of Owl’s Hill began in 1959 when Huldah (Cheek) Sharp sold Cheekwood, her childhood home, to Nashville to become a public garden and fine arts center. Huldah and Walter Sharp purchased a 140-acre farm, constructing scenic stone walls. After Walter's passing, Huldah sold the property to the University of Tennessee Nashville in 1972 for research and nature preservation. In 1988, Owl’s Hill Nature Center was established, and in 2007, it became an independent nonprofit organization. Today, the sanctuary encompasses over 300 acres and is home to more than 2,000 species of native flora and fauna.
