Founded in 1990 by a passionate group of citizens in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the Oshkosh Area Humane Society (OAHS) emerged from a commitment to improve the lives of animals in the community. Initially known as Friends of the Shelter, this dedicated group worked tirelessly to enhance the local animal shelter's conditions and operations. In 1998, OAHS was officially established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, taking over the shelter's operations and expanding its mission to serve both animals and people.

In 2005, OAHS moved to a newly renovated 13,000 sq. ft. facility, allowing for a broader range of programs and services. The organization made a groundbreaking pledge in 2009 to become a Life Saving organization, ensuring that no healthy, treatable animal would be euthanized due to length of stay or capacity constraints. This commitment has led to a remarkable live release rate averaging 96%, showcasing OAHS's dedication to animal welfare.

Impact on the Community

Each year, OAHS serves approximately 2,600 animals and positively impacts the lives of over 180,000 people through various community services, including animal adoption, crisis support for families, and pet therapy visits in nursing homes. With a focus on progressive practices and high ethical standards, OAHS has earned respect both locally and nationally.
