Our Story

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Virginia (OLLI at UVA) was founded by a group of passionate individuals eager to continue their education and engage with fellow lifelong learners. Established in 2001, OLLI began as the Jefferson Institute for Lifelong Learning (JILL) with a grant from the University of Virginia. In 2007, it was renamed to honor the Bernard Osher Foundation, which has provided multiple grants to support its mission. Today, OLLI at UVA connects over 2,100 participants with a diverse range of courses and community events, fostering a vibrant learning environment.

Impact

Since its inception, OLLI has expanded significantly, growing from 17 instructors and 98 participants to over 63 instructors and 684 participants by 2011. In recent years, OLLI has offered 193 courses, enriching the lives of thousands in the Charlottesville area. With projections indicating a growing population, OLLI is poised to continue its mission of providing educational opportunities and community engagement.
