Access To Quality Music Education

Our Story

In the spring of 1981, Roberta Guaspari Tzavaras, a passionate violin teacher, began her journey in East Harlem by launching a violin program at Central Park East School. What started with just 40 students quickly grew to over 130. In response to budget cuts in 1991, Roberta founded Opus 118 Harlem School of Music, ensuring that quality music education remained accessible to the community. With the support of parents and musicians, benefit concerts were organized to sustain the program, leading to the establishment of a comprehensive community music school.

Impact

For over 30 years, Opus 118 has transformed the lives of thousands of children in East Harlem through affordable music education.
