Our Story
Operation Nightwatch began as a street ministry under the leadership of Gary Vaughan, reaching out to houseless individuals in doorways, loading docks, and campsites. Over the years, it has evolved into a vital hospitality center in downtown Portland, where those in need can gather for warmth, companionship, and essential services. The center offers a welcoming environment for socializing, sharing stories, and enjoying coffee and sandwiches. It has become a hub for various activities, including foot care clinics, monthly birthday celebrations, and comedy movie nights.
With the guidance of dedicated Executive Directors, including Debbie Coppenger and Gary Davis, Operation Nightwatch has expanded its outreach beyond downtown Portland, establishing programs in North Portland, Vancouver, and Woodburn. The organization has integrated medical and mental health services, ensuring that guests receive comprehensive support tailored to their unique needs.
