Our Story

At the turn of the millennium, Julie, a retired high-tech professional, found herself at a crossroads in life. Initially planning to return to work, she embraced her role as a stay-at-home mom and began researching ways to support military kids. Growing up in a military family, Julie understood the challenges faced by these children and felt a deep calling to make a difference in their lives. The tragic events of 9/11 ignited a fire within her, leading to a commitment to support service members on a larger scale.

Inspired by President Bush’s speech about the generational commitment to the war, Julie took action. Witnessing the harsh conditions faced by deployed soldiers, she discovered a newspaper article about a group making care packages. After the group dissolved, Julie took the remaining inventory to her garage, determined to get it to troops overseas. With the help of Randy Bye, a volunteer with the American Red Cross, they co-founded Operation: Care and Comfort in 2003.

Initially operating under the Silicon Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, OCC thrived and became a standalone 501(c)(3) organization in 2010. Over the years, Julie learned about the spirit of volunteerism and witnessed the remarkable generosity of Americans united by their desire to support those who serve. Volunteers became her extended family, forming a culture of caring that transcended boundaries.

Our Impact

Operation: Care and Comfort has filled over 300 cargo planes and delivered millions of items in care packages overseas, providing essential support and comfort to service members and their families.
