Our Story
In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Open Space Education emerged as a transformative force in education. Founded in 2021 by Director Blythe King, this organization recognized the urgent need for a new approach to learning. By taking education outdoors, Open Space Education has ignited a deep connection between elementary and middle school students and the natural world, while integrating art into their experiences. As Richmond's only organization that combines art education with nature-based learning, Open Space Education is dedicated to creating immersive, accessible, and inclusive experiences for all.
Impact
Research shows that time spent in nature and engaging with the arts significantly enhances children's holistic development. Outdoor experiences improve cognitive abilities, reduce stress, and foster social skills, while arts education boosts academic achievement and emotional intelligence. Open Space Education is committed to providing these vital experiences to the youth of Richmond.
