Our Story

The Open Door is a sober living home established in Toledo in January 1984, born from the urgent need for a safe haven for homeless men struggling with substance abuse. Following a harsh winter storm, the community recognized the necessity for a supportive environment. The first residents moved in on March 1, 1984, with initial backing from the Toledo Catholic Diocese and local organizations. In 1986, the Open Door Ministry, Inc. was officially formed, achieving 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in 1988. Today, it operates three properties, providing a nurturing space for 24 men, allowing them to stay for up to 24 months as they work towards reintegration into society as sober, productive individuals.

Impact

The Open Door has created a calm and therapeutic environment for men battling substance abuse addiction. Through the spirituality of the 12 Steps and other proven program requirements, countless success stories have emerged, positively impacting both the residents and the Toledo community.
