Our Story

One Heart Bulgaria’s journey began in 1997 when co-founder Heidi Barker delivered humanitarian supplies to an orphanage in Sofia, Bulgaria. Moved by the dire conditions, she committed to making a difference in the lives of these vulnerable children. In December 2000, Heidi and friends brought Christmas joy and medical supplies to the orphanages, igniting a passion for ongoing support.

As interest grew, Heidi and her friend Radost Yanakieva initiated monthly donations for food and medicine, discovering that even small contributions could create significant change. By March 2003, One Heart Bulgaria was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in both America and Bulgaria, rapidly expanding its reach to over 850 children across 10 orphanages.

Today, One Heart Bulgaria collaborates with over 30 orphanages, 2 children’s hospitals, and 6 community daycare centers for children with disabilities. The organization is dedicated to creating sustainable solutions that empower orphanages and improve the lives of children in need.

Our Impact

One Heart Bulgaria focuses on long-term solutions to the challenges faced by orphans and children with disabilities. By designing tailored sponsorships and programs, the organization meets the specific needs of each child. Training for orphanage staff is a crucial aspect of this mission, equipping caregivers with the skills necessary to provide compassionate and effective care.
