Our Story
On The Rise Inc. emerged from the urgent needs of homeless women in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who struggled to access existing support programs. Founded in 1995 by Katya Fels-Smyth, the organization began with a mobile outreach initiative aimed at providing a safe haven for these women. Over the years, On The Rise has evolved, expanding its services and outreach to include transgender and nonbinary individuals, recognizing the unique challenges they face in society.
Since its inception, On The Rise has grown from a small church basement operation to a vital community resource, now housed in a beautiful Victorian home. The organization has successfully completed a $1.6 million capital campaign to secure this space, which serves as a launching pad for women and gender-diverse individuals seeking stability and support.
With a commitment to inclusivity, On The Rise provides innovative services to nearly 450 participants annually, helping them transition from homelessness to thriving in their own homes. The Keep The Keys program, launched in 2008, has successfully housed over 347 individuals, with 92% of those remaining connected to On The Rise still housed today.
