Our Story
Founded by Donna Yates, Olive Tree Arts Network emerged from the recognition of poetry's power to combat hate. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Yates established Poetry Pals in Chicago, engaging students from diverse faiths in creative expression. This initiative operates in nine private schools, including Christian, Muslim, and Jewish institutions, fostering understanding among students in grades 3 through 5.
Impact
Since its inception, Olive Tree Arts Network has reached over 5,000 students. Participants consistently show increased empathy, knowledge, and confidence when interacting with peers from different backgrounds. As Suzanne Mishkin from Solomon Schechter Day School notes, "Our students learn they have much more in common with people of different faiths than they thought."
