Welcome to Old Town Playhouse

Since 1960, Old Town Playhouse has been a cornerstone of the Traverse City community, providing exceptional theatre experiences that engage, entertain, and educate. Founded by Elnora Milliken and a group of passionate theatre enthusiasts, OTP has evolved from humble beginnings into a vibrant cultural hub, showcasing hundreds of productions that reflect the talent and creativity of local artists.

A Rich History of Community Engagement

Old Town Playhouse began its journey as the Traverse City Civic Players, staging its first production, "You Can’t Take It With You," at a local school. Over the decades, the Playhouse has moved through various venues, ultimately purchasing and renovating a historic church to create a dedicated space for the arts. With the introduction of the Studio Theatre in 1978, OTP has offered audiences an intimate theatre experience, fostering a deeper connection between performers and spectators.

Commitment to Education and Youth Engagement

Incorporating the Traverse City Children/Teen Theatre in 1993, OTP has prioritized education in the arts, providing young people with opportunities to explore their creativity and develop their skills. With over 20,000 participants each year, OTP is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of artists and theatre lovers through performances, workshops, and special events.

Recent Developments and Future Aspirations

In recent years, OTP has made significant improvements to its facilities, including energy efficiency upgrades and the installation of new windows. The Playhouse has also embraced modern technology with new ticketing software, ensuring a seamless experience for patrons. As OTP continues to grow, the hiring of a full-time Artistic Director in 2024 marks a new chapter in its commitment to delivering high-quality performances and expanding its community outreach.

Impact on the Community

Old Town Playhouse brings entertainment and education to over 20,000 participants each year, through over 90 performances, 25 Young Company performances, and numerous special events and community appearances. The Playhouse serves as a vital resource for the community, fostering a love for the arts and providing a platform for local talent.
