Our Story
Founded in 1997 by Don R. Nicholson, II and D. Kent Meyers, Oklahoma Lawyers for Children (OLFC) emerged from a profound realization during a Child Watch Tour. Witnessing the overwhelming number of abused, neglected, and deprived children in the Oklahoma County Juvenile Justice Center, these two attorneys were compelled to take action. They began recruiting volunteer attorneys to advocate for these vulnerable children, and the organization quickly grew.
In 1998, OLFC received an Administrative Order from the Oklahoma County District Court Judges, allowing the organization to be assigned cases directly from the Juvenile Public Defender’s office. This pivotal moment enabled OLFC to represent the 5,000 children in the juvenile justice system at that time. By 2011, OLFC expanded its reach further with another Administrative Order, allowing volunteers to be appointed in special circumstance cases in the District Court of Oklahoma County.
Today, OLFC’s dedicated volunteer attorneys provide Guardian Ad Litem services, ensuring children receive necessary medical, dental, educational, and mental health services. The organization also assists children with special needs and prepares them for life outside of foster care. Educational Guardian Ad Litems (Ed GALs) focus on advocating for the educational success of foster children, receiving ongoing training in state and federal education law and the unique challenges faced by youth in foster care.
