Our Story
Offender Aid and Restoration (OAR) is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a safe and thriving community where individuals impacted by the legal system enjoy equal civil and human rights. Established in 1974, OAR emerged from local faith communities' commitment to support those in jail, continuing a movement that began in 1968 in response to a prison riot in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Our Impact
OAR journeys alongside individuals experiencing incarceration and those transitioning back into society. By providing essential pre and post-release support, including employment assistance, transportation, food, mental health services, and housing, OAR plays a crucial role in reducing recidivism rates. Each year, OAR's Community Service program engages adults and youth in meaningful service, contributing over 100,000 hours to more than 300 nonprofits in the D.C. metro area.
