Our Story

Founded in 1971 by Artistic Director Brenda Way, ODC originated as the Oberlin Dance Collective in Ohio. Relocating to San Francisco in 1976, ODC established a vibrant urban setting for contemporary dance. Notably, it became the first modern dance company in the U.S. to own its facility, the ODC Theater, built in 1979. In 2005, ODC expanded its mission with the opening of the ODC Dance Commons, a hub for various artistic programs and services.

Impact

ODC serves over 50,000 audience members, 1,000 professional artists, and 16,000 multi-generational students annually.
