O'Connell Children's Shelter
EIN: 52-1057012 · Lawrence, KS
Our Story
The O’Connell Children’s Shelter was established in 1975 through a generous land gift from Mrs. Elsie O’Connell and her late husband, Dan. Incorporated in Kansas in 1976, the first Ranch house opened in 1978, providing a structured and loving home for young men. In 1981, the need for a local emergency shelter for juveniles led to the establishment of the Lawrence Children’s Shelter. In November 2021, O’Connell Youth Ranch and The Shelter, Inc. merged to form The O’Connell Children’s Shelter, dedicated to serving children, youth, and families in the community.
Impact
Currently, the O'Connell Children's Shelter serves almost 60 children in residential care across five facilities in Douglas County. The organization promotes safety, stability, and love, ensuring that every child feels valued and supported.
