Our Story

Founded in April 1973, the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department began with a dedicated group of retired citizens in the Ocean Pines community. Armed with an old white fire engine, they responded to their first 12 calls for service, all while operating on a shoestring budget. The initial members, including chemical engineers, electrical engineers, and teachers, donned raincoats and fishing boots as their gear.

By 1977, the department joined the Worcester County 911 system, expanding its coverage to 851 homes. Over the years, the OPVFD has grown significantly, now serving approximately 3,090 homes and operating a fleet that includes 2 Class A pumpers, a Heavy Rescue engine, a 104′ tower ladder, and 3 state-of-the-art ALS equipped ambulances. In 2020 alone, the department responded to 1,949 calls, showcasing its commitment to the community.
