Our Story

In 2013, foster mom Michele Austin opened her home to create a foster closet, driven by the desire to provide essential items for children entering the foster care system. Recognizing that many kids arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs, Michele sought to fill this gap. After discovering the Foster Closet of Michigan, she established the Oakland County branch, which has since blossomed into a vital resource for local families.

As the need for support grew, so did the Oakland County Foster Closet. Transitioning into a 501(c)(3) organization in May 2018, OCFC has expanded its reach and services significantly. With generous donations from the community and the dedication of volunteers, the closet moved into a larger office space in March 2023, now boasting 4,000 square feet to accommodate its growing inventory.

OCFC is committed to finding a permanent home in Farmington/Farmington Hills, where it can continue to serve children in need. The organization is currently working with architects to design a facility that will support its mission for years to come.
